MLS Influenza Viruses Used to test for Antibodies in Vaccine Delivery Study
In their 2007 publication in Clinical and Vaccine Immunology entitled: “Preclinical Evaluation of Microneedle Technology for Intradermal Delivery of Influenza Vaccines”, Jason B. Alarcon, Andrea Waterston Hartley, Noel G. Harvey and John A. Mikszta explored the strategy of intradermal vaccine delivery. By developing and incorporating microneedles into reliable and easy-to-use vaccine delivery devices, the authors overcame the difficulty associated with performing intradermal injections using conventional needles and syringes. In addition, they showed that microneedle-based intradermal delivery of viral and DNA-based influenza vaccines elicits antibody responses that are at least as strong as intramuscular injection.
This study utilized two Meridian Life Science, Inc. (BIODESIGN International Brand) Influenza A Virus products to test for antibodies in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and in a hemagglutination inhibition assay (HAI): # R86288 (Influenza Virus Type A (H3N2), Strain A/Panama/2007/99) and # R86380 (Influenza Virus Type A (H1N1), Strain A/New Caledonia/20/99/IVR116).

Antibodies are specialized molecules of our immune system that can specifically recognize and neutralize pathogens or foreign substances. Antibody research in biotech and pharma has recognized this natural defense potential and is working intensively to make it therapeutically useful. From monoclonal antibodies used against cancer or autoimmune diseases to antibody-drug conjugates that specifically transport drugs to disease cells - the possibilities are enormous
