Definiens and BioImage Announce Collaboration for High-Content Screening (HCS) Applications

07-Dec-2004

Munich and Copenhagen. Definiens, a leading provider of advanced image analysis solutions, and BioImage, a leading drug discovery and assay services company announced a worldwide, non-exclusive co-development and marketing agreement to deliver tailored applications to the high-content screening (HCS) market.

Definiens' and BioImage's offerings are complementary, whereby BioImage is providing cell-based pathway screening assays with its unique Redistribution® technology, and Definiens is providing Definiens Cellenger®, their unique software for automated image analysis, based on Cognition Technology.

The agreement also includes co-development efforts, combining BioImage's high content assay expertise with Definiens' unique image analysis solution, aiming at the development of specific applications in the area of HCS.

This powerful combination enables customers to perform robust data extraction from high content cell-based assays with a flexibility and a throughput not previously available. BioImage's Redistribution® technology aims at discovering new generations of small molecule drugs that change the activity of signalling pathways by modulating protein translocation. In addition to drug targets such as kinases, Redistribution® assays address disease targets that are not amenable to traditional drug discovery. BioImage performs pathway screens involving protein translocation read-outs using their high content Redistribution® platform. BioImage uses Definiens Cellenger® to measure and quantify the activity of small molecules in Redistribution assays.

The Definiens Cellenger® HCS solution is an advanced software system for the powerful automated high-content analysis of cell-based assays that enable the reliable and fully automated data extraction. The Cellenger® HCS solution allows detailed analysis of structures of interest even in complex image data and the extracted objects are counted and morphometrically measured.

"Our partnership with BioImage brings important benefits to our customers," said Thomas Heydler, CEO of Definiens AG. "With our leading-edge Cellenger HCS solution we offer a comprehensive application for automated image analysis in the HCS marketplace. Now, with the support of BioImage's expertise in developing specific applications for high-content screening, we provide even more sophisticated capabilities. Partnering with companies such as BioImage will continue to enhance Definiens' leadership role in image analysis for the high-content screening market."

"Combining forces is the right way to meet today's demand of bringing together the best combination of technologies for leveraging the potential of high content cell-based assays" added Dr Patrik Dahlen, CEO of BioImage. "Our collaboration with Definiens significantly enhances our technological capabilities, and allows us to make image analysis an integral part of assay development. Cell-based screening will reach a new form of excellence by this joint effort. We are looking forward to make this collaboration a real success story in the future."

Commercial terms of the collaboration were not disclosed.
