Growing Alberta's Pool of Biotech Talent via On-line Training
The biotechnology sector is a growing part of Alberta's economy and an important component of economic diversification in the province. Regulatory compliance is a key issue facing the industry and expertise in this area is in high demand.
Mount Royal College will have the exclusive right to offer these courses in Alberta.
"BHRC is very excited to be working with Mount Royal College, which enjoys a solid reputation of teaching excellence," says BHRC Executive Director Claire Thifault. "Our recent study of HR in the biotechnology sector underlines the need for regulatory affairs expertise in Canada and we are glad to see Mount Royal come forward to meet the challenge."
"I am very pleased to see the extension of quality BHRC courses into Alberta on a regular basis, providing opportunities for Western Canadian students to improve their skills in the GLP and GMP areas." says Richard Perry, Director, Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals Alberta Innovation & Science "The coupling of the well recognized BHRC courses in GMP and GLP with the quality education of Mount Royal College in Calgary will be another boost to providing skilled biotechnology workers in Alberta."
The Biotechnology Human Resource Council developed the courses to comply with federal regulations governing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Clinical Practices (GCP). Students who take the new online courses will be well equipped to find work in the biotech sector with the skills required to steer new discoveries in biotechnology from testing through to commercial production. Each 50-hour module is offered online and features online facilitation and collaboration.
"We are pleased to offer these BHRC courses in Alberta," says Donna Spaulding, Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension at Mount Royal College. "Mount Royal is known for responding to industry needs by offering training in high-demand areas and bringing courses to the market as soon as the need is identified. We are pleased to be associated with BHRC in filling this need in the growing biotech sector."
The courses are offered in the Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension's winter 2005 semester beginning in January.
