Dharmacon Named Best Reagent Company at RNAi-2004-Boston Meeting on RNA

07-May-2004

Lafayette and Waltham. Dharmacon, Inc., the leading global supplier of innovative RNA and RNA-interference (RNAi) research products, announced that it was named 'Best Reagent Company in the RNAi Field' at the second annual RNAi-2004-Boston Meeting on RNA Interference: biology to Drugs & Therapeutics held in May in Waltham, Massachusetts, and organized by GeneExpression Systems(TM).

"On behalf of the talented and dedicated employees of Dharmacon, I am honored to accept this award as 'Best Reagent Company in the RNAi Field'," said William Marshall, Ph.D., executive vice president of research and operations and site manager at Dharmacon. "Our long-standing commitment is to develop innovative products and technologies to bring the power of RNAi to every researcher who seeks to harness its potential to advance life-sciences research. As a pioneer in the field, we look forward to continuing our tradition of excellence, innovation and customer service."

The parameters used in determining the award included perceived quality of RNAi products, demonstrated research commitment to developing novel chemistries and algorithms for the production of small-interfering RNAs (siRNAs), number of product citations by RNAi researchers in peer-reviewed journals and the overall market share of the company's siRNA products. Awards were determined by members of the conference's scientific committee as well as by ballots cast by conference participants.

"We want to acknowledge both Dharmacon and the other award recipients who helped make our conference focusing on the basic biology and applications of RNAi such a success," said Krishnarao Appasani, Ph.D., M.B.A., founder and chief executive officer of GeneExpression Systems, Inc. "It is the continuing efforts of these innovators who will ultimately help us realize the full potential of this important new technology. This conference became a platform to present the cutting-edge technologies not only by academicians, but also by industry leaders like Dr. William Marshall from Dharmacon."

Other conference awards included the 'Best Poster Award' given to Dr. Esther Stoeckli of the University of Zurich for the first demonstration of RNAi in ovo, which provides a tool to study vertebrate embryos; the 'Best Presentation Award in Basic RNAi' given to Dr. Luk Van Parijs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his elegant approach in dissecting the disease process using genome-wide RNAi approaches; and the 'Best Presentation Award in Applied RNAi' given to Dr. Aimee Jackson of Rosetta/Merck for demonstration of off-site effects in RNAi.

"Fisher Scientific acquired Dharmacon because we wanted to offer our large worldwide customer base the best RNA interference products and technology available," said Leland Foster, president and chief executive officer of Fisher Biochemicals. "This latest award is further confirmation that we achieved our goal when Dharmacon joined the Fisher family, and we look forward to supporting and enhancing their continuing product innovations going forward."
