Boston. Northeastern University's Professional Master of Science program in bioinformatics, which was successfully launched in the Fall of 2001, has spawned a new interdisciplinary Professional Master of Science Degree program in biotechnology, with specializations in molecular, pharmaceutical and engineering biotechnology. The Professional Master of Science programs are part of the University's biotechnology initiative which includes collaboration from the Bouve College of Health Sciences, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Barnett Institute to provide expertise and help shape the vital biotechnology industry.

The Professional Master of Science program is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation which funds innovative educational programs in science and technology. The flexible, two-year full-time programs are designed to address the needs of both students and the biotechnology industry and draw upon the University's tradition of uniting education and real-world experience.

Students enrolled in the Biotechnology Masters program will gain core science knowledge, as well as instruction in business management, presentation and writing skills, and ethical issues relevant to biotechnology. In addition, students will participate in six-month internships in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry. The objective of the program is to prepare students for immediate productivity in industry, government or clinical settings upon completion.

"Northeastern University is very excited to introduce the new Professional Master of Science program in Biotechnology as part of the University's biotechnology initiative. This program will contribute to the economic vitality of our region by offering educational opportunities for students interested in biotechnology as well as creating a highly skilled workforce for the biotechnology industry," said Mansoor Amiji, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biotechnology Education Coordinator.

The Massachusetts biotechnology industry currently employs 25,000 people, which is triple the number the industry employed in 1999. As the trend of growth continues, biotechnology companies are looking for a greater skilled workforce comprised of professionals who have earned advanced degrees, possess a broad knowledge of biotechnology and have industry experience. Northeastern University's Professional Master of Science Degree program addresses these issues by providing students with a vast knowledge across disciplines as well as work experience through germane and practical internships.

The program is highly competitive admitting only 20-25 students every fall. Admission to the program is on a rolling basis. For more information on the Professional Master of Science program, please visit: www.biotechms.neu.edu.
