Bedside detection of the signatures of heart disease

07-Mar-2013 - Korea, Republic of (South Korea)

A disposable point-of-care device has been designed that can detect cardiac troponin I (cTnI) – a biomarker that is highly specific to cardiac injury. The approach uses a surface acoustic wave immunosensor packaged within a disposable microfluidic cartridge that can test for cTnI in the blood. The new test is comparable in terms of accuracy and sensitivity to laboratory-based methods.

Cardiac biomarkers are extremely important for diagnosing cardiac illness, including acute myocardial infection, which can often be fatal. Delays in diagnosis and treatment can seriously affect a patient’s outcome, making point-of-care devices a valuable resource.
