Artificial Intelligence for faster and more reliable radiological findings

11-Apr-2019 - Germany

The use of artificial intelligence makes medical findings faster and more reliable: mediaire GmbH is developing innovative methods that help radiologists detect neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or multiple sclerosis, earlier and faster. The High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), together with a group of private investors, is investing a large six-digit amount in the growth of this Berlin-based start-up.

The goal of mediaire GmbH is to increase patient safety and facilitate everyday practice in radiology. Currently, a radiologist has on average only 3 seconds to analyze each image of a long image series in order to come up with a diagnosis. This inevitably leads to a decreasing quality of the diagnosis due to excessive demand on the human doctor. In principle, machine learning could be employed to significantly improve this condition. However, obstacles such as the small amount of annotated data, the black box character of deep learning and the regulatory requirements for a medical device stand in the way of its widespread use. In addition, the respective software solution must be perfectly adapted to the radiologist’s workflow and meet the strict legal requirements for secure handling of sensitive patient data.

This is where mediaire GmbH comes into play: Its fully automated software solution delivers precise examination results and diagnostic suggestions within a few minutes. This enables radiologists to use state-of-the-art technology to provide diagnostic support while the patient is still in the practice. To this end, mediaire uses deep learning methods for the detection and evaluation of biomarkers, specially designed to achieve high quality results with only a limited number of annotated data. Another unique feature is that mediaire’s software solution is fully integrated into the IT system of the radiological practice and thus the patient data never leaves the practice.

Dr. Andreas Lemke, co-founder and CEO, is looking forward to the future: “With the successful certification as a medical device and the completed seed financing, some of the most important milestones were accomplished within one year. If we maintain this momentum, we can really succeed in sustainably shaping radiology”.

Prof. Henrik Michaely, co-founder and user of mediaire’s software products, is confident as well: “Thanks to mediaire’s software md.Brain, brain volumetry is automated in the shortest possible time and I can discuss the results with the patient within the same appointment. I am very happy that we were able to achieve this goal together and look forward to what is yet to come”
“We were impressed by how mediaire has developed a software, md.brain, to support radiologists with complex issues in the evaluation of brain MRIs. Above all, the intuitive operation of the software in combination with the technical and medical expertise of the team and the clear market focus are valuable assets of mediaire. We are convinced that mediaire will be able to revolutionize the market of AI supported diagnostics in radiology” explains Dr. Juri Bach, Investment Manager at HTGF.

Sebastian Burian, representative of a private investor consortium, adds: “We are excited to partner with mediaire and support the realisation of its vision to revolutionize radiology. This capital raising provides the company with a solid capital structure to make that happen. Mediaire has now the financial foundation to roll out its recently certified brain volumetry product to its clients and invest in new research and development simultaneously. We all look forward to making a positive difference for patients and radiologists.”
