EMBO Appoints Bernd Pulverer as Head of Scientific Publication

23-Nov-2009 - Germany

The European molecular biology Organization (EMBO) announced the appointment of Bernd Pulverer, PhD as Head of Scientific Publication. Pulverer will lead the development and execution of publication strategy in support of the organization’s peer-reviewed research journals. Bernd Pulverer takes on the position following the retirement of Les Grivell who joined the management team in 2000 and has led EMBO publications for the past five years.

Reporting directly to the EMBO Director and to the EMBO Council, Pulverer is responsible for editorial policies and overall management of the journals including business development, publication and marketing. Consulting with an advisory board, he will develop coherent strategies that ensure existing and potential future journals attain leading positions in the highly competitive and dynamic field of peer-reviewed research publication. He will lead the EMBO team of research editors – currently 14 PhD scientists supported by five editorial assistants across the four journals.

Immediately prior to joining EMBO, Bernd Pulverer served as editor-in-chief of Nature Cell Biology since 2002, after previously working for three years as associate and then senior editor for Nature. The Austrian biologist obtained his PhD in 1994 from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in London, UK, and pursued an academic career in Canada, the United States and Austria for a decade before entering scientific publishing.
