Quantum-TouchQuantum-Touch is a hands-on healing system that claims to utilize "universal life force energy" (Qi) to assist oneself and others heal physical and emotional issues.[1][2] Quantum-Touch differs somewhat from Reiki in that practitioners are taught specific body awareness and breathing techniques to augment the flow of energy from practitioner to client. Quantum-Touch falls under the broad category of "energy healing" within the realm of Alternative medicine.[3]
As with Reiki and other energy-based, alternative healing modalities, Quantum-Touch faces skepticism within the Western scientific community with regard to claims of its effectiveness.[4] Quantum-Touch (often called QT by practitioners and instructors) has, however, found acceptance in various circles, such as by Dr. C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., Founding President of the American Holistic Medical Association.[5][6] Additional recommended knowledge
BackgroundIn 1978, author Richard Gordon (Your Healing Hands - The Polarity Experience) attended a healing workshop taught by healer Bob Rasmusson[7][8]. The techniques learned at that workshop became the basis for Quantum-Touch. Gordon and Rasmusson developed a close relationship while Gordon learned and refined the techniques.[9] By 1986, Gordon began officially using the Quantum-Touch name. Development of advanced Quantum-Touch techniques were introduced in 2001 with efforts of Gordon, Mary Derr[10], Alain and Jody Herriott[11] and others. Quantum-Touch is taught at three levels: Basic; and two types of advanced techniques, Supercharging and Core Transformation (I and II). The basic concepts of Quantum-Touch are claimed to use the principles of Entrainment (physics) and resonance to help describe the mechanism of how healing occurs.[12] Through the kinesthetic experience of "sweeping" energy through the practitioner's body and linking that with specific breathing patterns, the client is said to match the vibration of the practitioner's high energetic resonance. [13] When the client naturally matches the vibration of the practitioner, the client's own innate, biological intelligence determines and executes the required healing. [14] Among Quantum-Touch principles are:[15][16][17][18]
As with Yoga practices, Quantum-Touch concerns itself with Chakras[22] . In Basic Quantum-Touch, students are taught to work with the first 12 chakras, spinning them to amplify energy[23][24]and combining various "colors" to effect different healing, such as structural alignments and pain and inflammation reduction.[25][26] One of the ways instructors demonstrate to their students the effect of life force energy on liquids is through the running of energy into wine. Students generally claim that this results in a change of odor, consistency and taste in the wine[27] Advanced Quantum-TouchAs Quantum-Touch evolved over the years, new techniques were introduced that are claimed to amplify the effectiveness and duration of healing sessions.[28] The advanced QT techniques fall into two distinct approaches: Supercharging, a Yang style of work; and Core Transformation, a Yin style of healing. (See more about Yin and yang.) SuperchargingDeveloped by instructors Mary Derr and Alain Herriott, Supercharging is a collection of various meditation and visualization techniques [29] aimed at developing practitioner awareness, increasing vibration in both practitioner and client, as well as approaches for emotional healing, weight optimization and even longevity.[30] Core TransformationDeveloped by Alain and Jody Herriott, Core Transformation moves in a direction that is significantly different than the concepts taught in Basic QT and Supercharging. Where Basic and Supercharging techniques could be considered to be Yang in flavor due to their very masculine/active approach, Core Transformation adopts an attitude of stillness that is distinctly Yin in character. Core Transformation I is a course that deals extensively with deepening a practitioner's awareness of energetic "flow" within the self and in others. Training methods include various meditations[31] and physical exercises. Where Basic and Supercharging deal with clients entraining to high vibrations in the practitioner, CT work adopts the approach of the client entraining to quietness as the practitioner creates a space of infinite possibility. It is claimed that such techniques offer significant advantages in certain circumstances, but can also be dependent upon the preferences of the practitioner and the client. As with Basic and Supercharging, CT techniques are claimed to cover the gamut of emotional and physical issues.[32] Core Transformation II is an extension of CT I that attempts to take up where the first CT course leaves off. Of significant importance in CT II is the focus of becoming aware of all the flows in and around energetic blocks in the body and that opens up a wider spectrum of abilities for the practitioner. The most notable of these added abilities involve the dissolving of emotional problems, allergies of any sort and even working from the genetic level.[33] Practitioner and Instructor CertificationQuantum-Touch has a set of requirements that define how one can become a certified Quantum-Touch practitioner[34] and instructor.[35] While there are no "attunements" required in the same vein as Reiki to reach a certain status, there are strict requirements to becoming a certified practitioner. Chief among these requirements are proof of training by the available instruction materials (book, interactive video workshop or live basic workshop) and documenting a number of hours of healing sessions. Certification for instructors includes basic practitioner certification, with the emphasis on receiving additional instruction so that the information can be imparted correctly to students attending an instructor's class. A certified practitioner is required to adhere to a Code of Ethics that is intended to protect client confidentiality, establish professional practices and prevent exaggerated advertising claims. Official practitioner certification enables one to advertise and charge for services rendered.[36] Using Quantum-Touch without charging does not require certification. It is claimed that by simply reading the book, one can achieve remarkable results.[37] Continuing Education Credits for Alternative Healthcare PractitionersQuantum-Touch has stated their intent is to apply with the NCBTMB for organizational CEU status for Massage Therapists. Continuing Education credits are available for Registered Nurses and Massage Therapists in some areas of North America. The New Mexico Nurses Association lists Quantum-Touch among its approved list of courses for Continuing Education in its Continuing Nursing Education Listings Approved CNE Activities. The Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy, which is licensed by the Michigan Department of Education, offers Continuing Education Units for Quantum-Touch classes taken by students in its list of Approved Classes for Continuing Education. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine offers Quantum-Touch among its General Interest Continuing Education courses. Educational MaterialsOfficial Quantum-Touch educational materials are available directly from the organization and other retailers such as amazon.com. Some of the materials include:
CriticismEffectivenessSince there is no scientific foundation for Quantum Touch, skeptics suggest that any therapeutic effect may be due to the placebo effect.[citation needed] A MedLine search for Quantum Touch reveals no peer-reviewed studies of the technique. Another view is that QT is used merely as a "feel-good" therapy, and that recipients themselves do not expect any significant healing effects. But practitioner claims that QT has therapeutic value can certainly be found on the Web[38]. SafetyConcerns about safety in Quantum Touch are similar to those of other alternative medicines. Many physicians believe that patients might avoid clinically proven treatments for serious conditions, in favor of unproven alternative medicines such as QT.[citation needed]
