It is a descriptive term for rarefaction of the white matter. Undelying vascular mechanims are suspected. It is inconsistently associated with cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, and gait disturbances. It may indicate a poorer prognosis and increased risk of stroke and brain haemorraghe.
