Institute of Human VirologyThe Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is a world-class center of excellence focusing on chronic viral diseases, most notably HIV/AIDS, and virally linked cancers. IHV was founded in 1996 and continues to be directed by Dr. Robert C. Gallo, co-discoverer of HIV and developer of the first HIV blood test. IHV is dedicated to fundamental and clinical research leading to improved treatment and prevention of these diseases. The institute's unique structure connects cohesive, multidisciplinary research and clinical programs to streamline new treatments from discovery to patient. IHV serves the global scientific community and treats more than 4000 patients at clinics in Maryland, as well as nearly 100,000 patients across Africa and in the Caribbean.
