Heinrich Werner

Heinrich Werner (May 14, 1874 – 1946) was a German physican who was born in Mühleisen, Thüringen. He studied medicine at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy in Berlin, and later became a military medical officer in the German colonies of German East Africa, German Southwest Africa (1904-1906) and Kamerun (1914). During this time period he was also a medical clinician in Hamburg (1906-1913). During World War I he was an army hygienist in Belgium, Romania and Russia. After the war, he practiced medicine in Berlin as a specialist of infectious diseases.

Werner is remembered for his description of trench fever during an outbreak of the disease during World War I. Along with Swiss anatomist Wilhelm His Jr, who also described trench fever, the disorder is sometimes referred to as Werner-His disease. This malady was caused by the parasite Rickettsia quintana. Werner also published several articles on tropical and parasitical diseases.
