GenoMik

The promotion concept GenoMik - genome research on microorganisms is a program for the study of the genome of selected microorganisms, promoted by the German Federal Ministry for education and research (BMBF). It was begun in the year 2001 and ran in its first promotion phase until 2004 and in its second phase until 2006. The aim of the project was it to promote the genome research at micro organisms and to support and coordinate the experts of this research range. It is based on three subranges:

  1. The competence network Würzburg with the title “genome research on pathogene bacteria” coordinated by Professor Werner Goebel.
  2. The competence network Göttingen with the „genome research on bacteria for the analysis of the bio diversity of the bacteria and their use for the development of new production procedures“ coordinated by Gerhard Gottschalk.
  3. The competence network Bielefeld with the „genome research on bacteria with meaning for agriculture, environmental protection and biotechnology “ coordinated by Prof. Alfred Pühler.

All authority nets are led by university mechanisms, represent a co-operation of industriell and academic research groups. The follow-up program GenoMik-Plus started in the summer 2006 with a renewed three-year promotion phase in order to submit the genome sequences of a further Anaylse compiled in the context of GenoMik. For this again three networks are promoted:

  1. The net Würzburg with the title "PathoGenoMik-Plus" coordinated by Prof. Matthias Frosch.
  2. The net Göttingen with "BiotechGenoMik-Plus" coordinated by Wolfgang Liebl.
  3. The net Bielefeld with "AgriUmweltGenoMik-Plus" which is coordinated by Prof. Alfred Pühler.

Together with the three networks promoted by the BMBF the structure of all participants of an accessible technology stage for microbial genome research is still supported. The three modules of the platform are registered in Bielefeld, Göttingen and Greifswald and offer technical support for genome sequencing (Goettingen), bioinformatics (Bielefeld) and proteom research (Greifswald).
