Bayer in Austria - around 130 years of tradition and innovation

Bayer's activities in Austria began in 1870, when the Viennese businessman Wilhelm Werner Otto took over the Austrian agency for Friedr. Bayer & Co. of Elberfeld, Germany.

In October 1898, the first sales office was opened in Vienna's 1st district. In 1925, the pharmaceutical activities were transferred to the newly founded "Vedepha", which was renamed "Pharmabüro Bayer" in 1938. The "Pharmabüro Bayer" also took over the distribution of crop protection products. From "Pharmabüro Bayer" to "Bayer Pharma Ges.m.b.H."

After the Second World War, "Chemia" Chemikalienhandelsgesellschaft m.b.H. was founded in 1946, which distributed the products of Farbenfabriken Bayer AG in Austria, with the exception of Bayer pharmaceuticals. In 1948, the previously mentioned "Pharmabüro Bayer" became "Protopharm", which continued the pharmaceutical business for Bayer and was renamed Bayer Pharma Ges.m.b.H. in 1967. In 1970, 100 years after Bayer's activities in Austria began, Bayer Austria Ges.m.b.H. was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary of Chemia and took over its sales activities with Bayer products. In 1985, Bayer Pharma merged with Bayer Austria. Thus the most important Bayer divisions were united under one roof. In 1991, the two companies, Chemia and Bayer Austria, were then merged. Following the acquisition of Schering, Bayer's former Pharmaceuticals Business Group has also been operating on the Austrian market as Bayer Schering Pharma since April 1, 2007. In Austria, Bayer Schering Pharma is integrated into Bayer Austria Ges.m.b.H. as a division of the Bayer HealthCare subgroup.
