ESTER Biotech is a Spin-Off of Leipzig University and its idea was born in the Biocity of Leipzig in 2022.

We believe that enzymatic recycling will fundamentally change plastic waste management. By breaking down plastics at a molecular level, enzymes enable a truly circular economy. They transform used plastics back into their original building blocks, enabling endless reuse. This innovation reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and minimises environmental impact. But enzymatic recycling alone is probably not the silver bullet. A truly sustainable plastics circular economy requires a multi-pronged approach by combining the advantages of waste reduction, substitution, traditional recycling technologies such as mechanical recycling and new recycling technologies.

Mission: We develop truly sustainable recycling solutions for a bio-based plastics circular economy, reducing reliance on fossil resources and minimizing plastic waste to create a cleaner, more resilient environment and healthier life conditions.
