chemagen Biopolymer-Technologie Aktiengesellschaft was founded in December 1997 as a spin-off company of the Rheinisch Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen. The scientific foundations were laid at RWTH and the concept of separating material mixtures with innovative magnetic particles was developed. From February 2011 to April 2023, chemagen was part of the PerkinElmer Group. Since May 2023, chemagen has been part of the newly founded Revvity group of companies. Revvity is a global diagnostics and life science company that offers customers a wide range of products and services for life science research, drug development and clinical applications.

Business areas

The company's core competence is the production, functionalization and modification of magnetizable polymer particles (magnetic beads) based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). In general, the areas of application for these particles include the purification of complex mixtures of substances prior to biochemical tests and molecular biological or medical diagnostics, as well as their use in large-scale production processes. Based on its own magnetic bead technology, Revvity chemagen Technologie GmbH offers in particular kits for nucleic acid purification and innovative instruments for the automated application of isolation processes. The PVA particles (M-PVA Magnetic Beads) bind to nucleic acids (NA) with high efficiency and are used, for example, in medical laboratories for the isolation of viral or bacterial DNA and in the field of HLA typing. However, they are also suitable for applications in the field of human genetics, for example when the human genome is isolated and sequenced or hereditary diseases are to be diagnosed.

Product range

Starting with the development of kits for nucleic acid purification, chemagen has expanded its product portfolio to include automated systems that can be operated exclusively with kits manufactured by chemagen (chemagic kits). In contrast to other methods of nucleic acid purification, such as silica columns, magnetic particles are very well suited to automating the process, as a centrifugation step is no longer required. chemagen's main product is the chemagic™ 360 instrument. With the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the demand for chemagic™ systems increased dramatically and became an important contribution in the fight against the coronavirus.
